Ocular pathologies are commonly encountered in small animal practice and the variety of problems, and their complexity presents a constant challenge for the general practitioner. The most common causes for ocular disease are infectious or traumatic. However, many times we are challenged by autoimmune, metabolic, neoplastic, and idiopathic diseases, many of which can present with ocular pain or significant discomfort, loss of vision and/or compromise in the integrity of the eyeball and/or its adnexa. Inappropriate management can lead to rapid permanently impaired vision.
This course will provide the basic knowledge and necessary tools to address the most common ophthalmic presentations and emergencies in small animal practice, explore potential differential diagnoses, describer appropriate first line therapy and provide guidelines on when to refer patients to a specialist. Further, indicated diagnostic tests the initial prognosis will be discussed.
